It was the night before Train Trek, and all through the house . . .

It is Amtrak Across America eve, and we are hustling and bustling trying to get everything packed and ready to go. I am not sure the Allied invading force on D-Day went through as much preparation as my brother does. "Everything AND the kitchen sink," his daughter says.

We had a swordfish and tortellini dinner with the entire Prochilo clan in preparation for our flight departing at 5:15 a.m. tomorrow. We are watching the Red Sox lose to the Orioles, although they are currently trying to stage an 8th-inning comeback.

Tomorrow and Thursday in class, my students will be investigating the drought in California and the state government's mandatory water restrictions instituted last year. They will start by locating all of the places the train will take us on our journey, using latitude and longitude. Students will then be introduced to the drought in California and will also read a news article about the government's response to the crisis. This lesson has been adapted from a lesson plan from PBS:

This investigation will coincide with our first full day, where we will get an extensive tour with the Sacramento Valley Water Management Program.

In Mr. Prochilo's Earth Science classes, his students (also my students, since we teach on the same middle school team) will be researching Hurricane Katrina and its impact on New Orleans, as well as the government response to that natural disaster. Mr. Prochilo is making use of some resources from National Geographic. This is the last major topic we will explore on our 16-day trip across the southern tier of our country.

What a shame! The Red Sox comeback fell short and the Orioles won, 3-2. Go Yankees!
